This is another sweetener which is several hundred times sweeter than sugar even though it is basically made out of sugar. Just like with most of the artificial sweeteners you need to use a very small amount of sucralose to get the sweetness that you want. In contrast to saccharin, this sugar substitute is very new as it was introduced to the public only a little more than 10 years ago, however, it is gaining popularity quickly. The two biggest disadvantages of sucralose: a) It is not a no-calorie sweetener; 2) It contains chlorine – a substance which might be harmful.
This sugar substitute is generally not as sweet as others and also more expensive, however, it reportedly tastes better and more natural. It contains almost zero calories, so it is really useful for diabetics, however, just like almost all other artificial sugar substitutes, it has been a subject of many controversies. There are people who believe that aspartame causes depression and headaches as well as increase the risk of cancer but there is no evidence to support that even though a lot of detailed studies have been done during the last few decades.
Fructose is a natural sweetener which can be found in a lot of berries and fruits. It is sweeter than sugar but it doesn’t raise the blood sugar levels as fast as sucrose. That may seem like a perfect sweetener for diabetics but in reality it can be harmful if consumed in large amounts. Yes, fruits and berries are a good choice for people with diabetes because they don’t really contain that much fructose and also have some other valuable nutrients in them but another popular product called high-fructose corn syrup is actually really dangerous for diabetics.
Another natural sugar substitute which is sweeter than regular table sugar while containing less calories than sugar and having much lower glycemic index than sugar and can be used as one of the sugar substitutes for diabetics, however, there are some people who don’t like xylitol and believe that it actually raises glucose levels very quickly. Most of health care professionals believe that xylitol is really good for diabetics if not used in excessive amounts. This natural sweetener can be found mostly in raspberries, strawberries and plums.
