Some Facts About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese healing system that works by inserting and manipulation of fine needles at specific points in the body for general good health and to relieve various ailments. There is an old story about the origin of acupuncture – it was an accidental discovery made when some Chinese soldiers were struck by arrows in battle and were cured of certain chronic ailments that they suffered from due to this.

Though acupuncture is growing more and more popular in recent times, there are still many who have certain apprehensions or doubts regarding this system that stimulates the life force or Qi in the body to heal. Some of the most frequently asked questions about acupuncture are:

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

It involves needles being inserted into the body so obviously the question of pain arises. The fact is that the needles used are very fine and inserted in a very specific manner so that most people feel no pain or very little pain. So long as the procedure is done in the prescribed manner, there is little or no pain. Some people report feelings of warmth or pressure; others feel a tingling, and yet others feel nothing at all.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

The important thing when getting acupuncture performed is to seek treatment only from a trained and qualified professional who is punctilious about hygiene and uses sterile and appropriate equipment.

Make sure that the needles used come from a sealed package and that they are swabbed with disinfectant prior to insertion. Lack of training or hygiene is known to result in infection and other complications.

Is Acupuncture Effective?

Acupuncture is one of the most popular kinds of complementary and alternative therapies used in the United States and a survey showed that about 8.2 million Americans have used the therapy at some or other time.
