A diagnosis of skin cancer can be a challenging event for many individuals and their families. While some types of skin cancer and melanoma are hereditary, there are a number of lifestyle decisions that can reduce one’s chance of developing skin cancer. In addition, many of these lifestyle decisions can reduce the risks of other types of cancer.

(1) Limit Sun Exposure –
It’s essential to limit sun exposure during the spring and summer months. The UV rays found in sunlight can cause DNA mutations in skin cells. While the human body can compensate for some mutations through repair mechanisms, an excessive amount of sun exposure can result in an increased risk of skin cancer.
People with lighter skin are at a higher risk of skin cancer. Many darker-skinned people have a very low risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancer.
(2) Use Sun Block Lotion –
During the summer months, it’s important to wear protective clothing or sun block lotion when outside. When purchasing a sun block lotion, it’s a good idea to look for a product with an SPF factor of 30. There are many tanning oils that offer minimal SPF protection. While these can be used to receive a natural tan, they may exposure the body to excessive amounts of UV rays.
It’s also important to reapply sun block lotion every 2 hours. While some sun block products have been marketed as being waterproof, recent legislative changes by the FDA have banned this practice. No sun block product is waterproof. It’s essential to reapply sun block lotion after spending time in the water.
(3) Wear a Hat –
In addition, it’s a good idea to wear a hat when out in the sun. While human hair can offer some protection from UV rays, many people experience sunburns on their scalps. It’s a good idea to look for a hat with a brim for protecting one’s face.
While sun exposure can be dangerous in excess, it’s important to receive some exposure to the sun everyday. The human body requires sunlight to synthesize vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a critical role in metabolism, bone production, immune function and more. As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to receive at least 15 minutes of sun exposure every day.
(4) Check Moles –
It’s also important to check sunspots and moles on one’s skin for malignant growth. A large mole or raised growth on the skin may indicate the presence of melanoma or another skin cancer. It’s important to understand that skin cancer isn’t limited to older people; younger adults and children who have experienced lots of sunburns sometimes develop skin cancer. If a mole seems very suspicious, it’s important to visit a doctor immediately. Any pain or swelling associated with a mole may indicate the presence of skin cancer.
(5) Eat Healthy Diet –
Diet can also play a role in minimizing the risk of skin cancer. It’s important to eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean meats. In addition, foods containing omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to protect the skin from the damaging effects of UV rays.
The body has natural mechanisms to heal the early stages of some cancers. When a cell replicates outside of normal boundaries, the immune system targets those cells for destruction. By maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle, the body can eliminate some cancers in their early stages. However, it’s important to see a doctor or dermatologist if one suspects he or she has melanoma.
