Leukemia – Symptoms And Treatment

The cancer in the blood cells is referred to as Leukemia. The bone marrow is the epicenter of this disease, as it starts to produce excessive white blood cells, which soon outnumber the normal blood cells. These cells are also called leukemia cells and do not work like the usual white blood cells. The incessant growth of these cells can cause serious problems, like infections, bleeding, and anemia which may be early leukemia symptoms.

Types Of Leukemia: 

There are primarily four types of Leukemia:

  • CML or Chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • CLL or Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • AML or Acute myelogenous leukemia
  • ALL or Acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Symptoms Of Leukemia:   

While the symptoms of leukemia vary from one patient to another, given below are some of the most common symptoms of leukemia that are often noted in patients:

  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Chills, fever or any other flu-like symptoms
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness or tiredness
  • Inexplicable weight loss
  • Recurrent infections
  • Bruising or bleeding easily
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Anemia
  • Pain in joints or bones
  • Discomfort or swelling in abdomen
  • Headache

Symptoms of Leukemia are usually too vague and are not very disease-specific. It is a common occurrence to overlook leukemia symptoms as they resemble the symptoms of many other ordinary illnesses or flu. In case, you have noticed some of the above symptoms, you better see a doctor to be on the safer side.

Treatment Options For Leukemia:   

Whatever may be the Leukemia symptoms and treatment option you choose, there are two treatment phases that a patient has to undergo:

Phase I –

Induction Therapy – It lowers the leukemia cells, and induces remission.

Phase II  

Maintenance/Continuation Therapy – Once the patient is into remission, the maintenance therapy aims to destroy the leukemia cells that were left, and increase the remission period as much as possible.

The treatment options available for Leukemia are:

(1.) Chemotherapy:

Drugs are utilized to eradicate cancer cells. Surgery is normally not a viable option as there is a risk that leukemia cells may spread to other organs of the body through lymph vessels and blood stream.

(2.) Bone Marrow Transplantation:   

This procedure involves the replacement of the diseased bone marrow of the patient with the healthy one.

(3. ) Radiation Therapy:  

In this process, high-energy rays or X-rays are used to shrink tumors and kill leukemia cells.

The advancement in technology has contributed a great deal to the improved medical conditions over the years. Leukemia patients can now be thankful as the survival rates for them have almost tripled in the past three decades.
