How To Overcome Insomnia

Why Do You Need Your Sleep?

Do you have trouble sleeping? If so, you’re not alone. The National Institutes of Health reports nearly 60 million Americans have trouble getting a good night’s sleep. There are many reasons for insomnia: chronic pain, restless leg syndrome, heartburn and overactive thyroid are just a few. If you’ve spoken with your doctor and can’t identify a medical reason for your lack of sleep, your issue could be stress-related — and lack of sleep due to stress is a vicious cycle – the more stress you have, the less you sleep, which brings more stress into your life.

While everyone needs different amounts of sleep to function (between 7 and 9 hours a night is normal for most adults), the benefits are the same for everyone. Harvard Medical School studies have shown healthy sleep patterns keep our mood elevated, allow our brains to process and store information and help our immune systems stay strong.

If you’re going more than a couple of nights without proper rest, there are a variety of methods that may help you combat insomnia:

It is no secret medical professionals want us to move more. But adding physical activity to your daily routine may do more than just whittle your waistline – it may help you fall asleep. The National Sleep Foundation recommends exercise in the afternoon as a method to fall asleep more quickly. You can also try a morning routine. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center conducted a study in 2003 that found postmenopausal women who worked out for 30 minutes at the start of every day fell asleep more easily than those who did not exercise.

Here’s an astounding figure: a 1996 report in the American Journal of Medicine quoted a study in which 100 percent of insomnia patients had improved sleeping patterns after introducing meditation into their daily routine. Meditation has long been part of Eastern religions and has been introduced in our culture over the past 40 years. There are many styles of meditation, but it is a highly individualized practice. Typically people spend 20 to 40 minutes in quiet contemplation, seeking a calm mind and zen-like state. Meditation may sound easier than it is; committing to a daily meditation routine can be difficult for those with busy lives and high stress levels.

Yoga is very beneficial to fight insomnia. Practicing yoga regularly has many health benefits both physical and mental.

Natural methods don’t work for everyone, and sometimes getting a good night’s rest is essential for a person’s mental and physical health. After reviewing your health history and current condition, your doctor may prescribe a sleeping pill to help restore your sleep.

Do You enjoy A Good Night’s Sleep?

A good and peaceful sleep during night is very essential for a person to wake up fresh and energetic. This makes a person enthusiastic to face the day ahead and work with full concentration and energy throughout the day.

What routine do you follow to have the much desired good and sound sleep at night?
