Diabetes affects the body in many ways. To understand effects of diabetes, let us first understand how diabetes is caused. Usually diabetes is caused by high blood sugar (glucose) level and it refers to diabetes mellitus. Excess of blood sugar can create an insulin deficiency. Insulin is a pancreatic hormone secreted by the beta cell of the islets of Langerhans. It causes absorption of glucose from the bloodstream by the body cells. But due to insulin deficiency, the body cells can’t utilize and absorb the glucose properly. Due to the high blood sugar level the different organs of the body can affected from various complications because of diabetes.
Types Of Diabetes:
Mainly diabetes is of three types. Such as: Type-1 diabetes, Type-2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes. In type-1 diabetes, the body can’t produce enough of insulin. In type-2 diabetes, the body can’t respond to insulin properly, which is known as insulin resistance. This is the most common type of diabetes. Gestational diabetes generally develops in a woman during pregnancy.
Effects Of Diabetes On The Body:
The effects of both type-1 and type-2 diabetes are similar, as both cause hyperglycaemia. Diabetes can cause blurred vision, thirst, increased urination, weight loss, extreme hunger and fatigue. If it continues for longer period, then it will affect the whole body and some main organs such as the kidneys, heart, eyes and nerves.
Effects Of Diabetes On The Eyes:
Diabetes affects the blood vessels of the eyes and cause diabetic retinopathy. Due to diabetic retinopathy the blood vessels of the eye can expand up to some extent. Maximum blood vessels will damage and very little amount of blood vessels will develop newly. If the blood vessels will burst in the eyes, then it causes blindness, blurred vision and glaucoma.

Effects Of Diabetes On The Kidneys:
Diabetes affects the kidney and the disease termed as diabetic nephropathy will also take place which damages the small blood vessels of the kidney. After this, it is incapable to filter the waste materials from the blood which causes kidney diseases or kidney failure and also accumulate waste products and fluids in the body. As a result kidney transplantation and dialysis takes place.

Effects Of Diabetes On The Heart:
Both the coronary heart disease and diabetes are related. Diabetes causes high blood pressure which is linked with high level of cholesterol. If the cholesterol level is high, then it increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks.
Effects Of Diabetes On The Digestion:
Diabetes affects the nerves and damages them, so as to cause diarrhoea, constipation and heartburn. The nutritional foods are not absorbed because the digestive system is not working properly. As a result, many diabetic people are overweight. There is also some medicinal effect on diabetics, which causes disturbed digestion.
Effects Of Diabetes On The Skin:
Due to the damaged nerves the blood circulation becomes very slow. Slow blood circulation, will lead to slow healing of cuts, dry skins, loss of feeling in the foot, fungal and bacterial infections, diabetic foot ulcers, burns and wounds.
Effects Of Diabetes On The Nerves:
Diabetes affects the nerves and damages them which is termed as diabetic neuropathy. .High level blood sugar can damage the covering of the nerves and the wall of the blood vessels, especially in the feet and the legs which causes numbness and tingling in the feet, legs and hands, vomiting, sexual dysfunction and nausea.
Different from the above health problems, uncontrolled or untreated diabetes can cause diabetic acidosis. The treatment includes both lifestyle modifications and medications. When medications are combined with weight control, regular exercises and a proper diabetic diet, only then proper management of diabetes is possible.
