How To Handle Postnatal Depression?

Having a baby is one of the most exciting things you’ll every experience.  Between finally meeting your new addition, seeing what they look like, and holding them for the first time, it’s an experience like no other.  These are all things we look forward to, and think about throughout our entire pregnancy.

What we don’t think about or at least try not to think about is what it will be like after we have a baby.  What kind of pain will be in?  Will our body ever go back to normal?  Or what happens if we experience postnatal depression?  These may cross our mind, but we tend to think about the more positive and exciting things than to dwell on the negative.

Postnatal depression, also known as postpartum depression is a serious issue that thousands of women have faced after having a baby.  It is a horrible thing to experience, and we often wonder if we’ll ever feel “normal” again.  There are many different symptoms ranging from no motivation to do anything, to just a constant feeling of stress on our shoulders.

Postnatal depression is more common than you may think.  It is also common for women to feel embarrassed by it or in denial, but it’s important to remember it will only continue if you don’t seek treatment.

If you think you may have post-natal depression, here are a few things you can do to handle postnatal depression

 Seek Treatment:

As stated above, you want to make sure you seek professional help since this is a serious issue.  Schedule an appointment with your OB/GYN and tell them how you’re feeling.  They can then prescribe you some medication to get you feeling 100% once again.  Remember, they see this all the time in patients so there is nothing to be embarrassed about!

 Get Rest:

It is important to get your rest.  This may be difficult because your baby wakes up for a feeding every few hours, but try to take a nap or sleep when they are sleeping.  For you to be able to take care of a baby, you first need to take care of yourself.

Volunteers:

Ask your friends and family if they can give you a hand.  Having them watch the baby while you sleep or clean up around the house is a great way to get what you need done.  Not to mention, I’m sure they’d love to spend time with your new baby!

Diet:

What you’re eating may also play a role in how you feel.  It is important to get your vitamins by eating lots of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains.  These give your body what it needs to function the way it’s supposed to.

Prenatal Vitamin:  

You will also want to continue taking your prenatal vitamin daily, just as you did when you were pregnant.  These are high in iron and can give you an extra boost of energy.

Exercise:  

Getting 30 minutes of exercise each day is not only a great way to stay in shape, but to stay healthy.  When we exercise our body produces endorphins. These are chemicals that help us relax, feel good, and get better rest.  These are three things that a person with postnatal depression needs.  Just remember to wait until your 6 week postnatal check up to get the OK so you can exercise.

Postnatal depression can be a scary thing if it’s not treated.  Previous cases have resulted in harm to the baby, and the mother.  So remember, if you’re not feeling like yourself because you feel extremely depressed, make sure you consider a few of these points to handle postnatal depression, and most importantly seek help from your doctor!
