During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims break their fast with dates. There is a reason for this. Dates are easily digested and packed with sugar and carbohydrates, both of which give an instant surge of energy to the body. In addition to these and other essential nutrients, dates are extremely delicious: reasons enough to include them in your diet.

Dates contain several vitamins, namely Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. They also contain calcium, Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate and folic acid. These fruits are also rich in minerals like iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, copper and manganese. It also contains essential fatty acids.

Dates contain anti-inflammatory compounds that help curb the growth of pathological micro-organisms within the stomach.

Dates contain good amounts of dietary fiber. This fiber is helpful for the heart. It may also help prevent the occurrence of different kinds of cancers.

Dates contain Vitamin A which helps maintain good eyesight. This is why dates are effective in countering night blindness and weak eyesight.

When dates are soaked in water, crushed and eaten after a few hours, they act as an excellent laxative.

Dates may improve sexual stamina. They may also be effective in countering sterility problems that result from functional disorders.

Dates are digested quickly and they provide an immediate surge of sugar to the bloodstream, injecting the person with energy and vigor. I love to eat a couple of dates immediately before a workout because I feel they give me extra strength.

It should be noted that dates are rich in calories. A kilo of dates contains more than 3,000 calories. While these fruits contain a plethora of essential nutrients, don’t overeat on them.

Dates are useful for pregnant women. It contains compounds that strengthen the uterine wall. It also aids the dilation of the uterus at the time of delivery and helps assuage excessive bleeding after delivery.

Since dates contain high amounts of calcium, they are good for the bones. The magnesium content in dates aids bone growth.

How To Eat Dates: 

Although dates are good for health, their sticky, sugary surface attracts flies and other microorganisms. Therefore, they must be washed thoroughly before they are eaten.

Dates may be added to warm milk, cereal or puddings. They can also be boiled with milk.

Dates may be soaked in water overnight and eaten as a thick solution in the morning. They can also be cut and added to your morning cereal or added to a variety of deserts such as fresh fruit salads, ice creams and cakes.

Date juice may be made by crushing and pressing dates.

Called the ‘crown of sweets’, dates grows in the deserts. Nature has fashioned this fruit in such a way that it is delicious, easy to eat and packs wholesome nutrition. People living in deserts eat this tiny fruit to gain the strength to withstand the trying conditions there. So, if you want good health, dates should be a regular part of your diet.

  1. Dates have so many health benefits, as you can see above. I personally like the medjool dates. They are so sweet. You should probably try them out.

  2. I never knew that dates were healthy.I was afraid of their high sugar content.Now that I know that they are effective in countering sterility problems.A couple of dates a day will be fine for me.
